Happy Catholic is a hodgepodge collection of numerous quotes
each followed by a thoughtful reflection of a few sentences to a few paragraphs.
The quotes come from just about every source imaginable – Scripture, Saints, TV
shows, movies, books, music and more.
The author, Julie Davis, was raised an atheist but upon
having a school age child end up in a Catholic school was drawn into the
Catholic Church. Soon Davis realized that the Truth that was God was everywhere
around her and not just in Church, prayer and theology books. Her excitement
turned into emails to friends which turned into her successful blog Happy Catholic and eventually into this
book. The author has a passion for quotes and wrote reflections whenever one
turned her mind toward God.
Happy Catholic starts with a brief introduction that gives
more information about the author’s journey into the Catholic Church, followed
by one hundred fifty pages of quotes with a reflection for each and then a list
of the sources of all quotes used. There
is even an index if the reader is looking for a quote by a specific person or
from a particular work of music or literature.
I’ve had this book in my stack for more than two months because I
kept trying to read it as a novel and was not successful in that approach. I
have discovered that doesn’t work. This is a book best read in little bites –
some quotes with their reflections provoke thought while others are just lost
on me.
