Summer Moms' Ministry

On Thursday, the summer session of our parish's moms' ministry began. I wasn't sure how it was going to work because we were taking the rather large morning group and combining it with somewhat small evening group as well as a few new moms. It was a fantastic evening. We split into three discussion groups (about 7-8 in each group)and began discussing this summer's book.

Bathe Seven Times: A Contemplative Look at the Seven Capital Sins is the book chosen by the leaders of the group and it's a fantastic book. I actually wish it were our Fall book instead since there's not quite enough time to adequately discuss two chapters each week. Each chapter has an introduction, what the sin looks like in me, in my spiritual life and in spiritual warfare. Then there are remedies - gifts of the Holy Spirit, words from the Cross and virtues. Each chapter ends with an examination of conscience - three pages for each sin. Some of these questions easily lend themselves to being a starting point for group discussion.

This first week we talked about anger and envy. Mother Nadine gives such real life examples that we can easily see the difference between righteous anger and sinful anger. Our group spent so much time discussing anger; we had little time left for envy. But maybe that's okay since anger seemed to be such a biggie for so many of us. I am looking forward to more weeks getting to know the ladies in my group and being shown more areas in need of improvement in my own life.

Bathe Seven Times can be ordered from Intercessors of the Lamb.

The prayer group at our parish is using this book and we just can't keep copies in the store.

This sounds like a great program! I wish my parish had something like this.

My understanding is that it's been a parish ministry for quite some years now.. and it's grown to where there will be two morning groups (there isn't enough space in the nursery for only one day group) and one evening group
