This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano is a beautiful hardcover picture book. The author writes a prayer in rhyme from the perspective of a child. The main characters (nameless so they can be any child) are a boy (about 7-9 yrs old) and his sister (about 4-6 yrs old). DeStefano teaches the multiple aspects of prayer through the story long prayer. He includes confession (forgive me, God), thanksgiving (thank you for a bunch of other stuff) and supplication (please help me to be brave and strong); adoration is present but not explicitly.
Mark Elliott's illustrations are perfect with their soft colors and gentle lines. The pictures combine modern items (handheld video game) with an old fashioned peaceful feel and look for a restful atmosphere for bedtime reading. Although DeStefano is Catholic, this book can be enjoyed by any Christian child and parent that wants to learn to depend more on God through prayer. This Little Prayer of Mine has been endorsed by the National Day of Prayer and positive reviews have been written by Theresa Tomeo (radio host on EWTN), Danae Dobson (daughter of Dr. James Dobson) and Bernice A King (daughter of Dr Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King) among others.
My 11 year old daughter and I read This Little Prayer of Mine together and we feel it is best suited for children ages 3-8 years old as a read aloud. It would make an ideal First Communion gift for that special child in your life.
